WEB ADDRESS: www.scarboroughmaine.com/slct/
PRIMARY FOCUS: The Scarborough Land Conservation Trust was founded in 1977
for the purpose of acquiring, preserving and managing unique land
within our community for the promotion and advancement of
     conservation, education and science.
WATERSHED WORK: To date, SLCT has protected over 500 acres of land which
consists of farmland, forestland, fresh and saltwater wetlands and
river systems. SLCT is actively working to protect land along the
Nonesuch River as it is the largest freshwater source to feed the
Scarborough Marsh. This effort aims to protect water quality and a
     diversity of habitats and wildlife.
CURRICULUM MATERIALS: SLCT properties: SEWELL WOODS, LIBBY RIVER FARM,
FULLER FARM and THE EASTERN TRAIL offer a diversity of habitat/land
cover types (woodland, farmland, saltwater marsh, river system,
wetlands) and are excellent sites for "outdoor classroom" learning,
and we encourage the schools to take advantage of them in their
studies. We also welcome teacher input for their further improvement
     for their specific purposes.
ISSUE TO EXPLORE: SLCT would like the community and the schools to
recognize the actual watershed boundary of the Scarborough Marsh (it
includes portions of Old Orchard Beach, Saco, Buxton, Gorham and South
Portland) and that land use activities within this watershed boundary
can impact the Scarborough Marsh. We encourage you to explore the
human and natural elements that make up the watershed and their
     impacts on the marsh.

WEB ADDRESS: www.mainetreefoundation.org
PRIMARY FOCUS: Project Learning Tree is an environmental education program
that uses the forest as a "Window on the World" to increase student
understanding of the environment: land, water and air. This pre K-12
curriculum is activity based and interdisciplinary and guides students
to become responsible and participating members of society. All PLT
activities have been aligned with MSLR.
WATERSHED WORK: As a teacher and volunteer member of Friends of
Merrymeeting Bay, I organized a Merrymeeting at the Bay event for
surrounding schools and communities bordering the Bay which is a
watershed for 6 rivers. This educational program and planning led me
to the job I currently hold as PLT State Coordinator. The guide and
modules contain water activities. I am currently involved with
community groups in 2 other areas of the state. We are planning a
similar proposal with schools and community groups working together to
educate students about the "places" where they live.
CURRICULUM MATERIALS: We can offer a PLT workshop for either or both K-8
teachers or high school teachers. Workshops are facilitated by 3
trained people representing education, the community and a natural
resource specialist. Workshops are prepared to meet the needs and
expectations of the host school. Workshops offer resources and
references available to local and state services.
ISSUE TO EXPLORE: The land area surrounding a watershed has enormous
effects on the river systems within a watershed. The Scarborough Marsh
is a filter system of great beauty and home to a lot of wildlife. All
the natural and human resources impact that Marsh. I would hope that
you explore the fill spectrum of habitats in your region and create a
curriculum avenue for children to explore the diversity of habitats
from pre K-12 and by the time students reach high school they will be
prepared for comparative data analysis among the habitats and will be
able to communicate an understanding of biodiversity as it relates to
Scarborough - from water quality and air quality to soils analysis and
     effects of vegetation.
