THIS FALL….

This September, the multi-grade "Eco-investigation" Field Trip was piloted. High school student mentors led approximately 120 K-8 grade students through a series of experiments within 3 habitats (pond, forest, marsh) at the Scarborough River Wildlife Sanctuary. The trip was very successful, especially for its multi-age interaction. Unfortunately the second trip was canceled due to weather. Teachers had also assembled packets of pre- and post-trip activities, background materials, identification keys, and additional resources, etc. The intention is for these resources to be widely circulated among all interested teachers.

Students of three high school Biology classes, for their year-long research projects, will be researching and defining the past, present and future values of some "thing" that gives structure to or interacts with the watershed that contains the Scarborough marsh. Requirements of the project include developing a relationship with a minimum of one community organization and/or individual who will serve as a resource, and presenting their findings at an end-of-year Salt Marsh Summit. Students have already been divided into their small working groups, and are establishing research questions on topics ranging from red tide to salting roads, Lyme disease to urban sprawl.

Project Learning Tree: Scarborough teachers have participated in 2 very successful PLT workshops, held at the Learning Center.
