SEEC NEWS      FALL 2001
The Scarborough Estuarine Ecosystem Curriculum (SEEC) Project is a K-12 curriculum resource that utilizes the Scarborough marsh and its related watershed system as a focusing topic for authentic, integrative learning.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF SEEC ...

The goals of SEEC are to give students, as they progress through their K-12 education, an increasingly sophisticated understanding of this watershed system as it relates to their community, to provide teachers with the support and tools to implement effective hands-on inquiry-based authentic learning experiences that use a local/regional natural resource as the focusing topic for integrative learning, and to create an environment in which teachers and students become resources of information for the community at large.

A major defining component of SEEC is the interaction of teachers and students with government, scientific, environmental, and community organizations and individuals who are involved with or share an interest in this ecosystem.

A desired outcome of SEEC is to empower students, and others who experience SEEC activities, with a sense of stewardship where they will become more informed and involved citizens who will be better able to balance the economic, social, and recreational needs of their communities with the ecological values of the landscape.

GOALS FOR THE COMING YEAR

The goals for this year include executing, evaluating and making adjustments to the piloted investigations; developing more instructional units; involving more teachers and students; organizing direct relationships between organizations and curriculum activity; developing the Web-based, self-mentoring learning environment; organizing Web-based and print resources; developing a physical site for maps and print resources; expanding communication; and pursuing SEEC funding sources.
